PARTNERING CHURCHES

The greatest problem seafarers face is loneliness and lack of contact with the outside world.    As a result of your generosity, in their few hours of free time in Charleston, crew members are welcomed by ChaPSS ambassadors who board ships to offer literature and unconditional love.  The crew can also walk off the ship and into a comfortable place where they call home, use the internet/SKYPE, and get assistance with specific needs, such as wiring money home and other personal business. In addition, transportation for personal shopping is provided and all these services are at no charge to the mariner.  ChaPSS not only serves international seafarers but also the needs of port workers, truckers, stevedores, and warehouse workers.

Seafarer Friendly Churches-Offer worldwide hospitality, fellowship, counseling and collecting and distributing gifts for the Christmas at Sea Program.

GUIDELINES - To become a Seafarer Friendly Church, a church pledges the following:

  • prayers for seafarers, mariners, and the work of ChaPSS
  • providing a speaking opportunity for representatives of Chapss
  • making or providing “in-kind gifts” for ChaPSS Christmas at Sea Program
  • *financially supporting ChaPSS with a proportion of outreach giving

As a Seafarer Friendly Church, ChaPSS will

  • give the parish the Seafarer Friendly Church logo for use on their website and printed materials
  • list the parish on ChaPSS website
  • give recognition in ChaPSS promotional materials
  • invite participation in ChaPSS special events

Your support makes possible the mission to the Seafarer.  Thank you!

The Charleston Port and Seafarers' Society is a Christian charitable organization that exists for the purpose of welcoming and serving the needs of those men and women who make their livelihood in the port or at sea without regards to nationalithy, race, ethnicity, politics or religion.

Each year, more than 65,000 seafarers arrive on hundreds of vessels to the Charleston Port. Most crews consist of persons from diverse third-world countries and from many cultures. Three to four nationalities are common for one vessel, with a crew of around 25 seafarers. Many are lonely, away from home and their families for up to a year at a time. The need and opportunity for ministry to these brothers and sisters is tremendous.
